An 8 stroke and 4 stroke cycle change, Cool Charge or Blackburn cycle engine where the opening travel of an inlet valve 2 is variable due to a variable fulcrum position on a lever, rocker or link 4 transmitting motion from a cam 3 to an inlet valve 2 eliminating the need for a throttle. The fulcrum 5 may be moved by a rod 6. A locater 7 may engage a groove in the rocker 4 to prevent the rocker from moving out of position. The 8 stroke mode requires a camshaft driven at one-quarter crankshaft speed and two alternate opening inlet valves for each cylinder to admit alternate 'air only' inductions between fuel/air inductions. A bar or link is movable to connect both inlet valves, rockers or levers so that both inlet valves open together for maximum power in 4 stroke mode. Hydraulic valve clearance adjustment is provided within the fulcrum. |
