A surface light source and a backlight unit having the same are provided to locally control the discharge by dividing the discharge space into a plurality of domains. A plurality of discharge channels(230) are formed on the first substrate(210). The second substrate(220) is combined with the first substrate in order to form a discharge space(240). A plurality of discharge channels are formed by molding the first substrate. The discharge channel is arranged with the same interval. Each of second electrode part(260b) and first electrode part(260a) is molded on the surface of the second substrate and the first substrate. The first electrode part is parallely formed in the leading end of the discharge channel of the first substrate with the discharge channel. The second electrode part is vertically formed in the surface of the second substrate with the discharge channel. The independent discharge voltage is applied to the first electrode part and the second electrode part.
