An apparatus for the selection of a mobile communications system in a portable terminal and a method thereof increasing the convenience of a user are provided to give a service acquiring time by searching WCDMA or GSM service area. A wireless processing part changes signal received through wireless path into baseband signal and provides the signal to a baseband processing part. The baseband signal from the base-band processing unit is actually transmitted on the wireless path through an antenna. A controller(520) controls the overall operation of the portable terminal. A national code confirmation part(540) and an automatic mode transform part(550) are controlled and a timer 1 and a timer 2 are operated. In the situation where GSM and WCDMA are serviced in order to automatically search GSM and WCDMA network.
