In an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) network in which transmissions are time division multiplexed into Superframes of 256 Medium Access Slots (MAS), each superframe having an initial Beacon Period of MAS's comprising a Beacon Period Start Time (BPST) and subsequent Beacon Slots each allocated to a different device (fig. 3a), collisions from new devices reserving the same beacon slot (fig. 3d) are resolved by randomly selecting a retransmission slot from a group including the slot which caused the original collision. This prevents unnecessary extension of the Beacon Period to accommodate new devices joining the network, which need not wait for the contraction of the Beacon Period wherein devices which reserved later slots are allocated earlier slots (figs 3b and 3c). Joining times for devices in dense UWB networks are shortened (fig. 8). |
