Alpha-olefins are polymerized in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, in the presence of a catalyst comprising an essentially amorphous titanium trichloride, an aluminium sesquihalide, and triethylene diamine, the mol. ratio proportions of the components being, aluminium sesquihalide to triethylene diamine from 1,25:1 to 5:1, and aluminium sesquihalide to titanium trichloride from 1:5 to 10:1. The polymerization may also be effected in the presence of hydrogen. The expression an essentially amorphous titanium trichloride means titanium trichloride of which the X-ray diffraction intensity is 10% or less than that observed with normally crystalline titanium trichloride. The alpha-olefin may be propylene, butene-1, hexene-1, heptene-1, octene-1, octadecene-1, ethylene, or 4-methylpentene-1. The exemplified aluminium compound is aluminium ethyl sesquichloride. U.S.A. Specification 2,951,066 is referred to.
