A boiler feed pump shaft gland assembly 1 comprises a bush 19 that surrounds the shaft 2 and has an internally threaded bore 20, the thread being so handed that, during rotation of the shaft, it opposes leakage of liquid along the shaft. The bush 19 is located at the low pressure end of the assembly and any leakage is collected in a bowl 22. The shaft has a liner 4 and leakage of water from the pump space 3 is opposed by water at a higher pressure and lower temperature than that in the space 3 which is supplied through a pipe 7 to an annular chamber 6 and leaks through the clearance 9 between a bush 8 and the liner 4 to a chamber 10 whence it discharges through a pipe 11 to a de-aerator (not shown). Escape of water along the shaft from the chamber 10 is prevented by water at a higher pressure and lower temperature than that in the chamber 10 which is supplied through a pipe 14 to a chamber 13 and leaks through the clearance 15 between a bush 16 and the liner 4 to a chamber 17 and escapes to atmosphere through a pipe 18. Finally, leakage of water along the shaft from the chamber 17 is opposed by the threaded bush 19.
