A method and an apparatus for encoding and decoding object-based audio signals are provided to supply more realistic sound through reproduction of an object audio signal, thereby providing a more realistic virtual reality experience to a user. An apparatus for encoding and decoding object-based audio signals extracts object based additional information and a downmix signal from an audio signal. The apparatus generates a downmix signal extracted from the object based additional information and a downmix signal modified based on the extracted information. The apparatus generates channel based additional information based on control data for rendering the downmix signal and the object based additional information. The apparatus generates a multi channel audio signal based on the object based additional information and the modified downmix signal.
