A method for driving a plasma display device which has a panel (10) having discharge cells each having a pair of display electrodes consisting of a scanning electrode and a maintenance electrode and a temperature detection circuit (46) which detects the ambient temperature of the panel (10) and outputs a detected temperature. Between the initialization period and writing period of one or more sub-field out of a plurality of sub-fields, an abnormal charge elimination period for applying a rectangular waveform voltage to the scanning electrode is provided to control the number of sub-fields to be provided with the abnormal charge elimination period according to the detected temperature detected by the temperature detection circuit (46).
