A hard disk drive protection apparatus and method are provided to control a hard disk drive into the idle state when an external vibration or impact is applied to the desktop PC, thereby improving the stability of the hard disk drive. A hard disk drive protection apparatus comprises a power supply unit which supplies power of fixed level, a sensing unit which is supplied with the power from the power supply unit and outputs a changed voltage level signal when the vibration or impact applied to a PC system is detected, and a controller which generates control signal according to the output signal in order to maintain idle state of the hard disk drive for a designated time. The power supply unit is an RTC(Real Time Clock) battery(120) which always supplies the power to the sensing unit.
