An electrode consists of Ti coated with a noble metal (ie. Au, Pt, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os or Ir), the Ti in the places where it is not fully coated by the noble metal having a barrier layer of TiO2 formed or strengthened thereon by a heat-treatment of the electrode in an O2-containing atmosphere. The electrode may consist of a Ti core completely surrounded by noble metal or may comprise a Ti layer coated with noble metal on only one side. The noble metal may be applied to the Ti by electroplating, chemical deposition, cathode sputtering, rolling or ultrasonic welding of a thin foil. Alternatively, (i) a layer of Ti may be electrodeposited on a thin foil of noble metal, or (ii) a layer of Ti may be electrodeposited on Fe and noble metal then applied. In the examples, (1) a Ti plate is pickled in aqueus HNO3/NaF, electroplated with Rh, heated in He at 400-500 DEG C. and finally heated in air at 800 DEG C., and (2) a Rh-coated Ti plate is anodized and the TiO2 thus formed in the pores of the Rh strengthened by heating in air at 800 DEG C. The electrodes are used in carrying out electrolyses. Specification 855,107 is referred to.
|
