An image forming device for performing an auto color registration operation and a method thereof are provided to prevent an unnecessary auto color registration operation and the waste of a toner caused by unnecessary concentration pattern and color alignment pattern by using a finally updated color registration adjustment value when not performing the auto color registration operation due to the low residual amount of the toner. A color registration controller(210) controls a printing unit(220) to output a color registration pattern on a transfer belt. When the color registration pattern is outputted on the transfer belt, a sensing unit(230) senses the non-registration degree among color alignment patterns. A color registration controller calculates a registration value from the sensed value, and controls a registration performing unit(240) to perform a correction operation based on the calculated registration value. As the result of the above process, the registration performing unit corrects data by an auto color registration algorithm.
