Convention date, Oct. 25, 1928. [Class 106 (iv).] Comprises an apparatus for photographically recording sound in which a sound-induced electric current is passed through a linear opaque conductor, causing it to vibrate in a magnetic field across the path of a narrow beam of light which is inclined to the conductor at an acute angle, the angle being adjustable in accordance with the invention. As shown, the legs 17 of an electromagnet are provided with aligned longitudinal bores. A converging lens in the bore of one of these legs 17 projects a reduced image of a source of light 1 on to the central plane 3 of the light gap between the pole pieces 20. In the plane 3, the strip conductor 4 vibrates and a converging lens 6 in the bore of the second leg 17 projects an image of the partly obscured light source 1 on to the sensitized filmband 7. The conductor 4 is mounted, as shown in Fig. 7 (a section on line VII-VII of Fig. 6) and in Fig. 8, (a section taken at right-angles to Fig. 7) in a sliding frame of non-magnetic material consisting of two parallel side parts 21 connected at one end by two transverse members 22, one end of the conductor 4 being secured between the transverse members 22. The other end of the conductor 4 is secured to a pin 23 extending into a sleeve 24 and a spring 30 imparts to the conductor 4 the required tension which may be adjusted by a second spring 27 acted upon by a stud 28 on a nut 29 screwed on the sleeve 24. On the wedge-shaped pole-pieces 20 a casing 31 of non-magnetic material is fitted and provided with an opening to receive and guide the side part 21 of the sliding frame. The casing 31 together with the pole-pieces may be rotated around the axis of the legs 17 to permit adjustment of the angle between the vibrating conductor and the image of the source of light.
