940,918. Carrying liquefied gases. CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE PENHOET-LOIRE. July 10, 1961 [July 12, 1960], No. 24957/61. Headings B7A and B7S. [Also in Division F4] A vat 3, Figs. 1 and 2, for the storage of liquefied gas is surrounded by a wall 2 which is spaced from the vat 3 to provide a chamber 5 containing pulverulent insulating material, ramming of the latter being prevented or eliminated by the injection thereinto of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, for the purpose of stirring or fluidifying the material. The wall 2 forms part of a ship having a main hull 1. The nitrogen is supplied under pressure by way of a vertical pipe 8 to a manifold 7 leading to pipes 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> which are disposed in the chamber 5 beneath the vat 3. Overlying the vat 3 is the deck 12 of the ship, Fig. 4, and disposed above the deck is a space 13 which contains a reserve of pulverulent insulating material and is connected to the chamber 5 by a duct 14 which is controlled by a valve 20 operable by means of a rod 21; any reduction in the volume of the insulating material in the chamber 5 due to ramming of the material can be compensated for by supplying the chamber with material from the space 13, or when the nitrogen is being injected into the chamber 5 any expansion of the volume of material in the latter can be allowed for by opening the valve 20. The insulating material may be fed to or extracted from the chamber 5 by pumping. An inspection manhole is provided in the wall 2, Fig. 3 (not shown), the manhole being closed by a plate which is welded in position. The inside of the wall 2 is covered with an insulating wall 19, the manhole being covered with a local layer of insulating material. |
