A mast lifting apparatus (1) for use in positioning and securing mast elements end on end to form a mast or tower. The apparatus includes a releasably attachable mast attachment block (3) adapted to support and guide a moveable beam (4) having a top end and, in use, to allow the beam to be raised relative to the mast attachment block that, in use, is attachable to a mast section. The top end of the beam is adapted with a pulley or sheave means (8), and a first means (11) adapted to lift a mast element into position and a second means (18) adapted for raising the beam.
