System and method for selecting a view mode and setting

A method for selecting a file view mode for a file list window in an operating system is provided. The method defines a presentation scheme for items presented in the file list window in an operating system. The method also allows a setting within that file view mode for one or more items in a screen display to be set. The method provided includes the steps of: obtaining a single user input via a slider input control indicative of a selection of one of a the available file view modes and also indicative of a selection of a setting within the selected file view mode, mapping the single user input to the selected file view mode, and mapping the single user input to the selected setting within that file view mode, where the selected file view mode and the selected setting define a presentation scheme for each of the items presented in the file list window on the screen display. A graphical user interface for the method, as well as computer based apparatus are also described.
