PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To connect line segments unconnectable through conventional edge connection processing in a contour extraction technique. SOLUTION: A method of connecting mutually corresponding edges among a plurality of edges in an edge image comprising the plurality of edges comprises: a process of dividing a measurement area into a plurality of separate small areas with respective small area numbers given thereto, and giving an individual edge label to each edge; a process of extracting the separate small area with disconnected edges from a distribution of edges contained in the respective separate small areas; a process of estimating a pair of corresponding edges to be connected from the nearby edge labels in the separate small area with disconnected edges; and a process of connecting the estimated pair of corresponding edges.
