PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of preventing any trouble of the paper feed operation in advance by reliably detecting an excessively loaded state in which a loading plate is pressed to the level of "release". SOLUTION: A paper feed cassette 12 pivotally supports a flapper 15 therein in a vertically movable manner, and a detection piece 41 along the vertical direction on one side of the flapper 15. A photo sensor 40 is arranged as a turn detecting means on an inner bottom side of a cassette frame. When the flapper 15 is turned downward, and the detection piece 41 is lowered, the detection piece 41 is inserted in the photo sensor 40 to detect that the flapper 15 is turned to the predetermined turning position. When the flapper 15 is pressed to the level of "release" and the paper feed cassette 12 is attached, the photo sensor 40 detects the detection piece 41 to perform the error processing.
