PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new driving method for extinguishing the light of a light emitting element put in a light emitting state by voltage impression control to a control electrode and a cathode electrode. SOLUTION: In the light emitting element having the cathode electrode having an electron emitting layer for emitting an electron by field emission, an anode electrode with a phosphor oppositely arranged to the cathode electrode and the control electrode for controlling electron emission from the electron emitting layer, the light emitting element is made to emit light by drawing the electron from the electron emitting layer by a potential difference between the anode electrode and the cathode electrode, and by making the electron acceleratedly collide with a phosphor to excite the phosphor, and the light emitting element is extinguished by stopping the excitation of the phosphor by making the potential of the control electrode lower than the potential of the cathode electrode, by weakening an electric field on the electron emitting layer, and by suppressing the emission of the electron to the phosphor from the electron emitting layer.
