PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means of detecting positioning and write/read timing of a write head and a read head for a bit patterned medium since the positioning and write timing of the write and read head needs to be accurately adjusted for the position of a bit island when the magnetic storage medium is previously bit patterned. SOLUTION: An apparatus uses an optical sensor for detecting the position of a bit island on the bit patterned medium to form a bit pattern signal, and includes a timing recovery circuit for producing a synchronization signal in response to the generated bit pattern signal, wherein the timing of write pulses is adjusted in response to the synchronization signal.
