PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high speed tool steel with which a high toughness can be given even in the large sized metallic mold by improving the conventional matrix high speed tool steel. SOLUTION: The high speed tool steel has a composition composed by mass% of 0.45-0.65% C, 0.10-0.50% Si, 1.00-2.50% Mn, 0.10-2.00% Ni, 3.50-5.00% Cr, 0.20-8.00% Mo+0.5W, 1.00-2.00% V, 0.01-5.00% Co and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and in a quenching after holding to 1100-1160°C, a transformation starting maximum temperature is made to≤350°C at 6-20°C/min average cooling speed till 300°C.
