PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new purification method to efficiently purify pentafluoroethane by removing chloropentafluoroethane and a noncondensable gas from a mixture containing at least pentafluoroethane, chloropentafluoroethane and a noncondensable gas. SOLUTION: A mixture containing at least pentafluoroethane, chloropentafluoroethane and a noncondensable gas is subjected to extractive distillation operation to remove the first fraction containing chloropentafluoroethane and the noncondensable gas and obtain the second fraction containing pentafluoroethane and having decreased ratios of chloropentafluoroethane and the noncondensable gas to pentafluoroethane compared with the ratios in the starting mixture.
