The seat (20) has a manually actuated release device (26) to release a locking mechanism (44) such that a head rest (24) is extended and retracted relative to rods (30, 32). The mechanism has a ratchet provided at a connection assembly (38), and another ratchet assembled for movement relative to a frame (36) and shifted to a disengaged position by the release device. The mechanism has a spindle (46) with an eccentric drive that works together with the latter ratchet such that the release device rotates the spindle and moves the latter ratchet from the connection with the former ratchet.
