PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat-resistant cushioning sheet material for a hot press which is arranged between the hot plate of a hot press and a material to be molded to be used, is good in placement properties in the hot press, does not generate dust and gas, is good in heat resistance and durability, and is prevented from being stuck to the hot plate even after being subjected to hot pressing at 300-350°C for several minutes-several hours under reduced pressure (for example, 10<SP>-4</SP>torr, 350°C, 5 kgf/cm<SP>2</SP>, and 5 h), and can be produced easily and inexpensively and a hot press molding method using the sheet material. SOLUTION: In the heat-resistant cushioning sheet material which is arranged between the hot plate and the material to be molded, inorganic fibers of the surface parts of at least the contact surface on the side of the hot plate and the contact surface on the side of the material to be molded of the surface and back of a cushioning substrate made of an inorganic fiber nonwoven fabric sheet which is a layer of inorganic fibers having an average fiber diameter of 4μm or below are bonded with an inorganic binder made of a swelling lamellar clay mineral, so that the sheet material is substantially composed only of inorganic substances.
