PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of designing the optimum shape of a bend-forming roll which can be also used for the manufacture of electric resistance welded pipe having various sizes without necessitating trial-and-error. SOLUTION: The target outside diameter R<SB>0</SB>desired to form, the target thickness t<SB>0</SB>, the maximum outside radius R<SB>fe</SB>of a roll desired to use for other purposes, the minimum thickness t<SB>fe</SB>in the maximum outside radius R<SB>fe</SB>, the minimum outside radius R<SB>fs</SB>of the roll desired to use for other purposes, the maximum thickness t<SB>fs</SB>in the minimum outside radius R<SB>fs</SB>, the angle varying rangeθ<SB>ctr</SB>of an upper roll, forming rateαwhich is shared with a stand and the ratio Kr of the target outside radius when welding to the target outside radius which is formed in the stand in which the roll is installed are set; simultaneous equations are solved by substituting these set values into seven numerical expressions; and a function R(θ) which is used for a roll caliber, a proper angleθ<SB>bottom</SB>of a lower roll, the minimum bending radius R<SB>min</SB>of a caliber, the maximum bending radius R<SB>max</SB>of the caliber and a bending starting positionθ<SB>p</SB>for achieving the target outside diameter R<SB>0</SB>and the target thickness t<SB>0</SB>are obtained, and thus the roll is manufactured.
