A blood oxygen monitoring system has a processor for processing an input from a light sensor device. The processor receives an input relating to one or more patient specific parameters and determining an output based on the light sensor device input and the patient specific parameter input. The patient parameter input is used to modify the system output to ensure a more accurate determination of oxygen saturation. The system can be used to derive patient specific R curves or an adjustment factor to be applied to existing stored data. There is also disclosed: A method of calibrating a blood oxygen monitoring system, comprising determining an adjustment factor required to be applied in producing an system output, wherein the adjustment factor is determined taking into account one or more patient specific parameters. A method and a sensor adapted for use in pulse oximetry, said sensor including one or more light emitter (s), arranged to emit an optical recognition signal that can be detected by a monitor and used to identify said sensor. A data carrier provided as an element that is retrofittable so it can be incorporated in an existing sensor. |
