<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device capable of displaying an image of high contrast and suitable for compactness. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes a pair of substrates (10, 20), a liquid crystal (50) composed of liquid crystal molecules (501) which has negative dielectric anisotropy and to which a pretilt is imparted in a first azimuthal direction (500) so as to be tilted by a first angle (α) to the normal (N), a first optical compensation device (210) having a positive uniaxial property and having a first optical axis (211) tilted by a second angle (θ1) to the normal in a second azimuthal direction (510), a second optical compensation device (220) having a positive uniaxial property and having a second optical axis (221) tilted by a third angle (θ2) to the normal in a third azimuthal direction (520), a third optical compensation device (230) having a positive uniaxial property and having a third optical axis (231) tilted by a fourth angle (θ3) to the normal in a fourth azimuthal direction (530) and a fourth optical compensation device (240) having a negative uniaxial property and having a fourth optical axis (241) along the normal. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
