Disclosed is a catalyst for decomposing a hydrocarbon composed of a hydrocarbon having 2 or more carbon atoms, which contains magnesium, aluminum, nickel and cobalt as the constitutional elements, while further containing ruthenium and/or palladium. This catalyst is characterized in that the ruthenium metal particles and/or the palladium metal particles have an average particle diameter of 0.5-20 nm, and the ruthenium metal and/or the palladium metal is contained in an amount of 0.05-5.0 wt% relative to the catalyst. The catalyst is capable of efficiently decomposing a hydrocarbon composed of a hydrocarbon (C2) having 2 or more carbon atoms, and can be produced at a lower cost. In addition, the catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for decomposition/removal of hydrocarbons, particularly for decomposition of propane, while being excellent in coking resistance. |
