A liquid crystal display device is provided to improve the overshoot by suppressing the aging of domain. A liquid crystal display device is a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display apparatus in which luminance and response speed can further be improved. A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a pair of substrates having electrodes and vertical alignment layers. A liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy is inserted between the substrates. Each substrate has linearly arranged alignment control structures(30,32) for controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal. Each alignment control structure is formed of a plurality of constituent units(30S,32S).
