PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a prescribed pattern rapidly and reliably using an image reader. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises: a reading section; a control section; and a pattern region including a prescribed pattern. The control section includes: a first image acquisition section for acquiring first image data; a pattern searching section for searching a prescribed pattern in the first image data; a second image acquisition section for acquiring second image data when no prescribed pattern is detected; a characteristic part searching section for searching a characteristic part in the second image data; a first reprocessing instruction section for specifying a position of a pattern region based on a position of the characteristic part when the characteristic part is detected for rereading by the first image acquisition section; and a second reprocessing instruction section for allowing the second image acquisition section to perform rereading at a position without including positions where the characteristic part is detected, when no pattern is detected again in the first image data generated by rereading by the first image acquisition section.
