PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hard ceramic electronic component hardly causing crack, high in moisture resistance, and hardly carrying a surface leak current. SOLUTION: A surface of a ceramic element 1 is covered with a diffusion layer 12. The diffusion layer 12 is a layer of an oxide formed by diffusing at least a part of elements included in the ceramic element 1 therein, and is formed in a region on a surface side of the ceramic element 1 relative to internal electrode layers 21 and 22 located on the outermost side. When the ceramic element 1 contains BaTiO<SB>3</SB>as a main constituent like a ceramic capacitor or the like, the diffusion layer 12 is produced by chemically reacting at least a part of elements included in the ceramic element 1 with at least one kind selected from Al, Si, Li and B.
