An improved design laundry basket has a box shaped housing with compartments (110) to store sorted clothes prior to loading into the washing machine (300). The compartments can be identified by a code system for automatic programming of the washing machine. The quantity of clothes in each compartment is monitored by an integral weighing system and is checked via a display.
