The device has a sensor (24) for generating a sensor signal when a gear selector lever (6) in a central gap (13) is moved over a shift track (15) in a direction of a shift track (25), which is associated with a reverse gear (R). A controller (21) activates a gap latch by a selected fast gear group (SG) based on the sensor signal. The controller activates a magnetic valve (17) so that a cylinder of a piston-cylinder device (10) is loaded with compressed air, where activation of the lever from the shift track (15) to the shift track (25) takes place against the pressure in the cylinder.
