<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus capable of performing return reproduction and recording and storing a temporarily recorded program by simple operation without providing any dedicated storage area or a dedicated device for temporarily recording a program under reception. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU 8 performs cache recording in a DVR 3 for each of contents divided at least either at a time point when a program on a channel under reception is switched or at a time point when a channel to be received is switched as an interval, and a content information management section 6 is caused to generate a virtual play list registering content information containing program title name information or the like for each of the cache-recorded contents.
