ANTI-COCCIDIAL COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING NITROFURAN DERIVATIVES

Nitrofuran derivatives of the general formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or lower (1-5 carbon atoms) alkyl group and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl or alkanoyl group are prepared by the interaction of 5-nitro-2-furaldehyde and the appropriate hydrazine derivative. Specific preparations relate to: (a) the preparation of 1-methyl-2-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) hydrazine using methyl hydrazine; (b) 1-acetyl-1-methyl-2-(5-nitro - 2 - furfurylidene) hydrazine by reaction of the compound (a) with acetic anhydride; (c) 1-ethyl-2-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) hydrazine using ethyl hydrazine sulphate; (d) 1-acetyl-1-ethyl-2(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) hydrazine by acetylation of compound (c) with acetic anhydride; (e) 1,1-dimethyl-2-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) hydrazine using dimethyl hydrazine hydrochloride; (f) 1-butyryl - 1 - methyl-2-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) hydrazine by treatment of compound (a) above with butyric anhydride; (g) 1-butyryl-2-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) hydrazine using butyryl hydrazine; (h) 5-nitro-2-furfurylidene hydrazine using hydrazine hydrate.ALSO:Compositions having anti-coccidial properties comprise an inert carrier in admixture with from about 1 to about 25% by weight thereof of a nitrofuran derivative represented by the general formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a lower (1 to 5 carbon atoms) alkyl group and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl or lower alkanoyl group. Specified compounds are: 1-acetyl-1-methyl-2-(5-nitro-furfurylidene) hydrazine (preferred) and the corresponding 1-acetyl-1-methyl-; 1,1-dimethyl-; 1-butyryl - 1 - methyl-; 1-ethyl-; 1-butyl-derivatives and the parent 5-nitro-2-furfurylidene hydrazine. The compositions may be in the form of "pre-mix" concentrates for incorporation into poultry feeds or in the form of a poultry feedstuff, the quantity of active compound being such that the feedstuff for consumption contains from 0.003 to 0.02% (preferably 0.015 to 0.02%) by weight.
