PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a catalyst, which is used for hydrocracking heavy hydrocarbons, in high yield while saving energy and simplifying its manufacturing process and to provide a method for hydrocracking heavy hydrocarbons by using the catalyst obtained by the manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the catalyst for hydrocracking heavy hydrocarbons comprises the steps of: depositing a metal and/or a metal compound on lower grade coal; heating/burning the coal deposited in a nitrogen atmosphere in a temperature range of≥400°C and <900°C; and carbonizing the heated/burned coal to obtain porous coal being the catalyst.
