PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical writing type display medium which ensures high contrast, without having to provide a light-shielding layer and can increase the voltage drive margin, while simplifying the constitution. SOLUTION: The optical writing type display medium has one or more optical modulation layers which comprises at least a pair of electrodes; a photoconductive layer, which is disposed between the pair of electrodes and has an electric characteristic distribution according to a light quantity distribution of writing light by irradiation with the writing light; and a liquid crystal layer, on which a partial voltage distributed according to the electrical characteristic distribution of the photoconductive layer, in a voltage applied between the pair of electrodes is applied and a visual image formed by an optical characteristics distribution, according to the partial voltage is recorded, wherein the photoconductive layer has a charge generation layer and a charge transport layer, and the charge transport layer contains, in addition to a charge transport substance, a pigment having an absorption in a wavelength region different from that of the charge-generating layer.
