PROCESS FOR PRODUCING HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE AND APPARATUS THEREFOR

A process for producing a plugged honeycomb structure that attains a reduction of production cost through shortening of production time; and an apparatus therefor. A honeycomb structure (1) is masked, and a fluid plugging material (31) (slurry or paste) is fed on the mask or the same plane as the mask. On the surface of the mask, a plugging device (24) with a pressurization plane for pressurization of the plugging material (31), arranged with an acute angle with reference to the surface, is moved so that the plugging material (31) is pressurized by the pressurization plane to thereby charge the plugging material (31) into the cells of the honeycomb structure. In particular, a partial area of the pressurization plane is brought via the plugging material (31) into surface contact with the mask and moved on the mask so that not only is the plugging material (31) pressurized toward the cells but also any excess plugging material (31) is pushed out along the moving direction and that further while forming an area of surface contact, there is carried out pressurized charging into the cells.
