PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which an alicyclic polymer can be produced from the aromatic rings of an aromatic polymer with a high conversion rate and high selectivity under industrially advantageous conditions of production. SOLUTION: The aromatic rings of an aromatic polymer are hydrogenated using a metal particulate catalyst comprising at least one metal selected from the group consisting of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, platinum, nickl and cobalt in the presence of an organic solvent to produce an alicyclic polymer.
