PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect eye positions using a simple technique and with high reliability from an original image containing a plurality of face images within one image. SOLUTION: A method for detecting eye positions from the original image containing a plurality of face images comprises: (A) a process for creating an image to be scanned out of the original image, scanning the frame of a face image size therein, and detecting areas in which to detect eye positions; and (B) a process for creating, for each of the areas in which to detect eye positions, a plurality of images of varying brightnesses as images for detection of eye positions, and specifying eye position candidates based on an area where pixels stick together, which area appears in a faded-out face area as each image for detection of eye positions fades in to low brightness from a state in which it fades out at high brightness.
