946,367. Fuel cells. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Jan. 24, 1962, No. 2621/62. Heading H1B. A fuel cell using an acid electrolyte in which the cathode and/or anode has as catalyst a platinum base alloy containing at least 0.003% wt. of Ir. Preferably, the electrodes are porous carbon impregnated with a particulate mixture of the metal catalyst. The fuel, which is fluid is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon or an oxygen substituted hydrocarbon. Fuel is supplied to the anode 3 and oxygen to the cathode 2, both immersed in e.g. aqueous H 2 SO 4 and separated by a membrane 7 that is non- permeable or ion-exchangeable and serves to prevent soluble fuel from pouring. If a non- soluble fuel is used then this membrane may be omitted. |
