PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader 1 for surely detecting a conveyed conveyance matter such as a coin 2 or small foreign matter 100. SOLUTION: This image reader 1 for reading the surface image of a coin 2 passing on a conveyance path B is provided with a CMOS image sensor 14 for setting the reading range of all pixels; and a CPU 401 for controlling the reading range of the CMOS image sensor 14, and for reading the image data of the reading range, and for deciding that the coin 2 has reached a reading region on the basis of the read image data. Then, when it is decided that the coin 2 has reached a reading region by specific line reading processing for reading the image data of a specific line L which is long in the width direction of the conveyance path B, the CPU 401 executes all range reading processing of reading the image data of the all ranges successively.
