PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber using the interior of a piston rod as a reservoir and sufficiently securing a capacity of the reservoir. SOLUTION: A piston 5 coupled to the hollow piston rod 6 is fitted in a cylinder 2 and the reservoir 4 is disposed at an outer periphery portion of the cylinder. A rod chamber 24 in the piston rod 6 communicates with a piston chamber 13 in the piston 5 via a radial passage 25. A hollow rod 28 fixed to a partition wall member 27 is inserted into the piston rod 6 and the rod chamber 24 is brought into communication with the reservoir 4 by the hollow rod 28. An extension-side disk valve 16 generates damping force during an extension stroke of the piston rod 6 and a compression-side disk valve 21 generates damping force during a compression stroke. Since the hollow rod 28 brings the rod chamber 24 into communication with the reservoir 4 at the outer periphery of the cylinder 2, it is possible to secure the sufficient reservoir capacity.
