PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner, in which a shape of plunger are formed in common regardless of a shape of a chain guide. SOLUTION: In the chain tensioner 1, a plunger 11 is inserted into a cylinder 10 to form a pressure chamber 12 in the cylinder 10, a leak clearance 15 is formed between sliding faces of the plunger 11 and the cylinder 10, a return spring 21 urging the plunger 11 in a direction projected from the cylinder 10 is provided, and a chain guide 8 is pressed by the plunger 11. A through-hole 24 is formed to the plunger 11, a shaft body 27 is pressed into a female screw 25 formed to an inner circumference of the through-hole 24 to form a spiral air ventilation passage 28 between the female screw 25 and the shaft body 27, a flange part 26 disposed to one end of the shaft body 27 is supported by a plunger end face projected from the cylinder 10, and the flange part 26 abuts on the chain guide 8.
