The system has a filter device (14) arranged upstream of an absorption catalytic converter (15) that is provided for nitrogen oxides. Sulfur-containing constituents such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, of exhaust gas are transferred into the filter device. The filter device has a coating, which includes lanthanum elements and rare-earth elements. The coating catalytically works with respect to oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide. The coating directly oxidizes the hydrogen sulfide.
