A vacuum cleaner and a control method thereof are provided to remove dust easily storing in a dust collecting device and to use the cleaner with little power. A vacuum cleaner comprises the followings: a main body equipped with a suction motor inside; a dust collecting device(200) forming a dust storage unit inside, attaching and detaching possible from the main body; a compression motor operating a compressing member and a pressurization member compressing the stored dust in the dust storage unit; a mode selecting unit for selecting an active mode of the compressor motor; and a control unit for controlling the operation of the compression motor.
