A vacuum cleaner and a control method thereof are provided to reduce troublesome work for removing dust out of a dust collecting unit by minimizing the volume of dust through compression. At least one pressing element(270,280) compresses dust stored in a dust storing part formed in a dust collecting unit(200), which is detachably mounted to a main body. A driving unit drives the pressing element. A control part controls the operation of the driving unit. A malfunction sensing part senses the malfunction of the pressing element. The control part displays the sensed malfunction to the outside via a signal display part.
