The invention comprises compounds of the general formula (II): (wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different and each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, or R1 and R2 together represent a fused cycloalkane ring, R5 represents an alkyl radical and X represents an alkylene radical which may be interrupted by oxygen, sulphur or amino-nitrogen, provided that each of the hetero atoms is bound by a chain containing at least two carbon atoms), their preparation by (a) exhaustively cyanomethylating the nitrogen atoms of an amino compound of the general formula (I): reacting the cyano groups of the cyanomethyl compound so obtained with an alcohol R5OH, and hydrolysing the resulting iminoether, (b) exhaustively carboxymethylating the nitrogen atoms of a compound (I) and reacting the resulting polyacetic acid with R5OH, or (c) exhaustively cyanomethylating the nitrogen atoms of a compound (I), hydrolysing the cyano groups of the cyanomethyl compound obtained and reacting the resulting polyacetic acid with R5OH, and a process for the production of metal chelates in aqueous and/or organic solutions by adding a compound (II) to a solution containing a metal. Compounds (I) in which R1,2,3,ta4 represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals are obtained by reacting a diamine H2N-X-NH2 with an alkylene oxide or halohydrin. N-(2-hydroxycyclohexyl) - ethylenediamine is obtained from 2-chlorocyclohexanol and ethylenediamine. Compounds (II) may be administered intravenously, intraperitoneally, intramuscularly or orally in aqueous solution in the treatment of radioactive contamination.
