PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retainer and a substrate storing container which can effectively suppress and prevent damage of a substrate even when an impact acts during moving or the like, and to provide the retainer and the substrate storing container capable of using a standardized lid body opening/closing device. SOLUTION: A container main body 1 for storing a precise substrate W, a front retainer 40 mounted on a lid body 20 for opening/closing a front face of an opening of the container main body 1 and holding the peripheral edge of a front part of the precise substrate W, and a locking means for locking and unlocking the lid body 20 covering the front face of the opening of the container main body 1 from an external operation, are equipped. The front retainer 40 is composed of a plurality of elastic pieces 45 deformably constructed between both side parts of a supporting frame body 41, an introducing block 48 formed at an approximately central part of each elastic piece 45 and fitted to the peripheral edge of the front part of the precise substrate W, and a pair of blocks 52 to be introduced formed at an approximately central part of each elastic piece 45 for pinching the peripheral edge of the front part of the precise substrate W.
