An explosive blasting composition comprises an inorganic oxidizing salt or peroxide dissolved in water and a thermal carrier having a particle size large enough to be retained by a 20-mesh U.S. Standard sieve. The thermal carrier is preferably magnesium, aluminium, or alloys thereof in the form of shavings, chips etc.; other suitable thermal carriers are the same as those referred to in Specification 952,837. The oxidizing salt may be a nitrate, nitrite, perchlorate, sulphate, chlorate, or chromate, especially ammonium nitrate, nitrite, or perchlorate. The ingredients of the composition may be mixed at the site or in the borehole. The mixture is orginally insensitive but becomes sensitive with passage of time. In an example the explosive consists of a mixture of magnesium band saw chips with a nearly saturated aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate. Specification 893,260 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 893,260. |
