An apparatus for controlling the speed changing modes in an automatic transmission for a vehicle is provided to transform the current speed changing mode state into the desired speed changing mode state using a MICOM. A controller(2) is connected to a shift control valve of the automatic transmission. The controller is connected to a control cable(1) operating the shift control valve according to the selection of the speed changing mode. MICOM(3) controls the speed changing mode according to the lock state of the start key, the break state and the select location. A plurality of speed changing mode option buttons(4) is changed by the speed changing mode. A speed changing mode selector(5) selects the speed changing mode by the control of MICOM.
